Thanksgiving is the peak day of the year for home cooking fires. Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Amanda Swenson says you should know how to use a fire extinguisher before you need to use one in an emergency…

“That’s a scary situation, and that’s not the time to learn how to use an extinguisher, so be familiar with how to pull out the pin, how to unhook a nozzle if there’s a hose with the nozzle attached.”

Swenson says you should have a lid close by when cooking on the stove. So in case of fire, you can slide the lid over the pan, turn off the stove and let the burner cool.
