What would be wrong with playing 3?

Sep 23, 2014 -- 5:30am

I am the Site Manager for Loyola Volleyball...a job that covers everything that goes on at the game.  Making sure that the Ticket Taker has her cash box and tickets and that they get into the safe at the end of the night.  Making sure the concession stand is opened and staffed.  Also taking care of the referees and line judges...plus announcing the starting lineups and the National Anthem.  Add a little crowd control and cleaning up the building and closing it down after everyone leaves...and you have a busy night.

For those of you who have never been to a High School Volleyball match...or it's been a long time...things are very different.  It used to be that you played the best of 3 games to 25...and you had to serve to score.  Now it's the best of 5 with rally scoring...meaning there is a point on every serve.  If the match is tied at 2-2: game 5 is the first team to 15pts...and they must as always win by 2 pts.

So a quick nite is 3-0 and everyone goes home in an hour or so.  If you have 1 team that is better than the other...but not REALLY BETTER...it's 3-1 and maybe an hour and a half.  But this season Loyola has played 5 games a bunch of times...which got me out of the door last night at 10:20.  Earlier this season the Crusaders lost the first 2 games of the match...won the next 2...and then won game 5 (I.E. A Great Night) Last week they lost the first 2 games...won the next 2 to force a game 5 and lost.  Last night..with St Clair...it was a back and forth battle...with Loyola winning the match 15-12 in game #5.  The Crowd was in it to the end...and both teams had chances to win...everything you would want in a High School event.  But just one question:  Could we just once play 3 games and get home at an early time?  Just asking.

See You on the Radio! Dan
