Minnesota State University Mankato is doing something that no other university has done before… an instructor is teaching two classes… in two cities nearly a hundred miles apart… at the same time… while interacting with both classes.

MSU has set up an array of large monitors at the front of each classroom, with live cameras in both classrooms, so students see each other, and their instructor in the middle. The system goes beyond any teleconferencing set up used before, with high-definition video and audio technology.

Besides the large monitors and live cameras and sound, separate monitors show graphics that relate to the lecture, a sort of high-tech blackboard.

Jean Humphries says she didn’t realize that she was the first anywhere to use the technology, and it’s working very well. Her students agreed. Last year, Humphries had to drive two hours to Mankato to teach the two credit course.
