Bar time downtown on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights can be hectic and even dangerous.

The Mankato City Council will vote tonight on a plan to move the downtown taxi stand from Cherry Street over to 2nd Street adjacent to the 2nd Street ramp effective August 20.

Assistant City Manager Tanya Ange has been working with Taxi owners and the Mankato Department of Public Safety to come up with a safer location for taxis to pick up riders after bar hours on weekends.

The City Council tonight will also set a hearing date to change the taxi ordinance to require license stickers on all cabs due to concern about Gypsy Taxis, after complaints that unlicensed cars are giving rides for money.

Other proposed changes would allow additional licensed drivers on weekend evenings.
