Labor groups, small businesses, faith leaders, farmers and nonprofits renewed their push at the State Capitol for paid family and medical leave — a move supported by House Speaker Melissa Hortman:
“D-F-Lers are determined to improve economic security for for workers and families, and that includes paid family and medical leave.”
The bill would establish a state-run program financed by premiums paid by employers, similar to unemployment insurance. Employers could charge-back their employees for up to half the cost. Business groups say many employers already provide leave to their employees and a mandatory program would put further financial burden on businesses that are struggling.
