(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Department of Human Rights says the Minneapolis Police Department has violated state civil rights laws over the past decade by engaging in a pattern of racial discrimination. A report released yesterday after a two-year investigation found that the agency engages with, uses force against, and kills people of color at a much higher rate than white people. City and police department leaders are accused of being long-aware of the pattern of discrimination, but not addressing it. The report says the city has “insufficient and ineffective” systems for holding police officers accountable for misconduct.
