U.S. Senator Tina Smith has introduced a bill that would expand the use of free, online college textbooks, allowing professors, students, researchers, and others to freely access material as a supplement or alternative to traditional textbooks.  Smith says too many college students are struggling to make ends meet:

“They figure out how to pay for their room and board and activity fees and tuition, and then they get their syllabus, and they have hundreds of dollars more expensive for textbooks. And they just can’t figure out a way of paying for it.”

Two-thirds of college students admit they don’t purchase textbooks because of the high cost.
