All one-thousand members of the Minnesota National Guard’s 1-194 Task Force are back home after an 11-month deployment to the Middle East. Lieutenant Colonel Jake Helgstad says 425 of the soldiers went to Kabul, Afghanistan in August:
“But simultaneous to that our medical company screened over five thousand Afghans. One of our support companies was the mayor cell for about two thousand people. So at that time all thousand in the task force were engaged, from myself all the way down to the 18-year-old kid who is just out of high school.”
Helgstad says this was the first deployment for 80 percent of the troops.
