The Minneapolis police killing of Amir Locke has fed the debate at the Minnesota Legislature between Republicans, who are pushing for more officers on the streets, and Democrats, who say there also must be better accountability.  And there are also trials of three ex-officers other than Derek Chauvin in the killing of George Floyd, points out Hamline University political analyst David Schultz:

“A combination of the federal (civil rights) trial right now and a coming state trial of police officers are gonna keep this issue on the burner through the 2022 legislative session and election cycle.”

Schultz says the political balance is between preserving citizens’ civil rights, versus not restraining police so much that they can’t address the crime problem.
