Democratic state lawmakers are proposing bills that aim to provide gender equity and declare the Equal Rights Amendment part of the U-S Constitution. At a House hearing this morning, Representative Kristin Bahner of Maple Grove said…

“We ask of our citizens that they abide by our laws, that they respect the rule of law yet we don’t currently provide for equal rights and protection under the law. I will assert that our role as lawmakers is to represent the interest of 100% of our citizens all of the time.”

House Democrats also have a bill to conform Minnesota laws to the Equal Rights Amendment. And there is a measure that would add an E-R-A in the state Constitution as well. Republican Representative Peggy Scott from Andover opposes the measures saying the terms “sex” and “gender” are too vaguely defined. And she has concerns that the measures “could move us backwards.”
