State Democrats and Republicans agree that dealing with rising crime is a priority this legislative session, but they have vastly different solutions. Senator Ron Latz of St. Louis Park says the increase in crime is a national trend, but…

“That doesn’t make Minnesotans feel any safer to call it “national” but what it does do is it says we can’t rely on the tried and true solutions that are being offered by the Republicans to ramp up penalties, throw people in jail, put juveniles in adult prisons and throw away the key.”

Republican leaders accuse Democrats of not doing enough. They’re proposing stiffer penalties for carjacking and longer sentences for violent criminals.
