(St. Paul, MN)  —  Opening statements have now been said to the jury in the federal trial against three former Minneapolis police officers.  Federal prosecutor Samantha Trepel gave the opening statement for the government.  She says the case is about the theory that a fundamental element of policing is that anyone in police custody is in their care.  She accused the three officers of doing nothing when George Floyd attempted to alert them that he was dying.  The defense attorney for one of the three officers responded during his statement that the government will have to prove the officers acted “with bad purpose and motive” and “a specific intent to harm Floyd.”
