U-S Senator Tina Smith is sponsoring a bill to increase the retention of public health and social service workers.  The bipartisan legislation would provide college loan forgiveness for those who stay in public health or social service jobs for a specific period of time.

“A lot of the problem is these folks have been retiring leaving the field. This was happening before COVID but COVID has made it much, much worse. People are so burned out and exhausted and just leaving.”

If the bill is signed into law, Smith says it would also apply to public health workers already working in the field.
