Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin seizure amounts rose significantly in 2021 compared to 2020.
Methamphetamine: 4.5 pounds, 1.5 pound increase
Cocaine: 194 grams, 100 gram increase
Crack Cocaine: 56 grams, 56 gram increase
Heroin/Fentanyl: 28 grams, 19 gram increase
Task Force Agents made 59 drug arrests and 13 non-drug arrests. Of the 59 drug arrests, 42 of them were at a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd degree level, meaning the charge was for a sale crime or the seizure amount was large. The 13 non-drug arrests included charges of 3rd degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm and kidnapping. Task Force Agents seized 19 illegally possessed firearms in 2021.
As predicted, drug overdose deaths rose in 2021. Agents conducted 12 overdose death investigations, up from 6 in 2020. Four people were charged with 3rd degree murder. Some of the investigations are still on-going with charges expected. The Task Force had a total of 97 non-fatal overdoses reported to them. Opioids like heroin and fentanyl continue to be the cause of the overdose incidents.
