Opponents today (Thurs) warned the state’s Sentencing Guidelines Commission against eliminating tougher sentences for those who commit crimes while on probation or parole.  Republican Senator Warren Limmer from Maple Grove:

“We have a rising criminal tide in this country, and it’s right here in Minnesota as well.  And I’m rather surprised we’re having a discussion about limiting and lessening the criminal sentences.”

But Democratic Representative Carlos Mariani from Saint Paul said he supports the Commission making decisions about sentencing guidelines based on data:

“These debates are tough without politicians in the room disregarding data, promoting unfounded fears, and trying to carve communities up into camps who are told they must choose between supporting liberty or supporting safety.”
