The Mankato City Council has given approval to spend nearly eight million dollars in sales tax revenue on improvements to the Mayo Clinic Health Systems Event Center and other community sports and recreation facilities. The council took the action at its meeting last night. The Mankato Free Press reports the council approved seven and a half million dollars in Civic Center improvements, including one and a half million for a roof replacement, three-point-nine million dollars for fixes to the exterior walls and one-point-seven million dollars for upgrades to the heating, cooling and ventilation systems. Other funding was approved for improvements to the Tourtellotte Park pool, Thomas Park and Community Athletics Field. The revenue comes from the half-percent local sales tax approved by voters in 2016, which is applied to most purchases outside of groceries and clothing.
