Minnesota is on track to having more unbelted fatalities on its roads than even last year, which had the highest numbers since 2014. State Office of Traffic Safety Director Mike Hanson says when he was in law enforcement, sometimes people he stopped for seatbelt violations would tell him “it’s my choice and my life”:
“You know, okay, I understand what you’re saying. But is that really what you want me to tell your wife, your husband, your family, your loved ones, when I walk up to their door to tell them that you’re not coming home again?”
Law enforcement agencies across Minnesota are now doing stepped-up seatbelt enforcement through the end of September.
