Governor Tim Walz — at a Rochester area school encouraging Minnesotans age 12 and up to get vaccinated — said there’s no plan at this time for him to mandate masks in schools — but if the situation warrants he’ll take a “re-look”:

“I will make all the decisions necessary, regardless of what the politics are, to keep students safe.”

To order masking, Walz would have to re-declare a peacetime emergency.  Republican Senator Roger Chamberlain from Lino Lakes says about that:

“No need to go to emergency powers — absolutely not.  Work with the legislature to see what we need.   Done it in the past.   We can do it in the future.  That’s what we’re here for.”

The governor said in Rochester he needs help from the legislature to address the situation that students face.
