Ramsey County Attorney John Choi today announced that felony prosecutions resulting from non-public safety or low-level traffic stops are coming to an end in his county. And he says the police chief, mayor and community leaders are all on board for the change…

“Culture will eat policy for lunch any day and nothing will change unless we actually have courageous people, leaders, who will step forward to do the right thing to advance justice in our community.”

Choi says, typically, these traffic stops occur when a motorist has an equipment violation and law enforcement is seeking evidence for a more serious crime. Choi says these types of minor infraction traffic stops “disproportionately affect black and brown communities and undermine the trust in the work police do every day to serve and protect the public.”
