With the new school year nearly here and delta-variant cases spiking, state officials say all unvaccinated school-age children and school staff should be tested for COVID at least once per week throughout the school year. But Education Commissioner Heather Mueller acknowledges the state cannot mandate it:
“We do not have the authority, nor have we had the conversation about requiring that.”
Where would that authority have to come from? Would that have to be action by the legislature?
“There would have to be some conversations with the legislature. Also, there would have to be some conversations at the local level about decisions that are being made by school leaders and school boards as they look at what they can require legally.”
Officials say according to C-D-C guidelines, unvaccinated children involved in sports or extra-curricular activities should be tested even more often than weekly.
