Republican lawmakers blame Democrats’ policies for the dramatic increase in violent crime in Minnesota.  Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka says “this is why you can’t go soft on crime.”  Representative Brian Johnson from Cambridge says House Republicans put forward numerous proposals that were rejected by Democrats who focused on reducing consequences for criminals:

“Everybody deserves to be able to let their kids play out in their front yard or their back yard, not have to worry about it.”

Democratic Senator Ron Latz from Saint Louis Park says Republicans are exploiting the public safety issue for “crass political purposes.”  Latz says,

“It’s not anti-law enforcement to be pro-racial justice,” and it’s not pro-crime to be against excessive use of force by officers.
