No state government shutdown in Minnesota. Less than three hours after the Minnesota Senate gave final approval Wednesday evening to an E-12 education bill — the largest piece of the state budget — Governor Tim Walz signed it into law. He and First Lady Gwen Walz, both teachers, then took the bill from the Capitol across the street to Secretary of State Steve Simon for official filing.
The governor said about the new E-12 education budget:
“The way I understand it, moving on two decades it’s been, since we put this type of investment and made those focus around equity.”
The governor signed all the remaining budget bills (E-12, state government, public safety and jobs) before the midnight deadline, avoiding partial state government shutdown. Debate on a tax cut bill continued past midnight.
