(St. Paul, MN) — Governor Tim Walz says his peacetime emergency powers will end by August 1st. In speaking at the state Capitol Friday, Walz claimed the increasing COVID-19 vaccination rates and declining case numbers in Minnesota meant he should wind down those powers. Since March 2020, the executive order allowed him to activate test sites, increase vaccination programs, and extend the state’s unemployment insurance among other actions. The governor said he will keep the emergency declaration though July to redeploy hundreds of reassigned state employees.
