At 8:13 PM on Tuesday, June 22nd an officer with the New Ulm Police Department initiated a vehicle stop for a traffic violation.  The incident occurred in the 500 block of 7th South St. in New Ulm.

During the encounter, the adult male subject became non-compliant and then combative.  During the ensuing struggle, the subject produced a handgun that was in his possession and shot himself.

The subject was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.  It was later learned the subject died from his injuries at a medical facility in the Twin Cities metro area at approximately 1:00 AM on Wednesday, June 23rd.

All New Ulm Police Department officers on scene were wearing activated body worn cameras that recorded images of the event.  Those images/recordings are being analyzed and will not be released at this time.

The identity of the subject is being withheld pending notification of family.

This incident remains under investigation by the New Ulm Police Department with assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
