Workers from AFSCME Local 404 will be engaging in an informational picket outside of the Saint Peter Regional Treatment Center TODAY. The picket will take place at the intersection of Nicollet Ave. and Highway 99.
The picket is meant to bring attention to the recent increase in staff injuries due to assaults by patients, and the unacceptable number of serious injuries staff in the Forensic Mental Health program have suffered. In the first 3 months of 2021, there have been 42 documented staff injuries caused by aggressive patient behaviors.
Additionally, workers are trying to highlight the increase in mandatory overtime being assigned, which union leaders cite as an additional factor in the rising number of injuries. So far in 2021, workers at the treatment center have logged over 25000 hours of overtime, a trend that has been increasing since 2019.
