Whether the Minnesota Legislature approves additional police reforms in next month’s special session is yet to be decided, because the issue was not part of the budget deal legislative leaders announced yesterday (Mon).  House Speaker, Democrat Melissa Hortman:

“I really believe there’s a lot of common ground.  I’ve been hearing about more places where we can agree, than a list of items that we can’t agree on.”

Senate Republican Majority Leader Paul Gazelka said there will be some police accountability measures coming out of the June special session, but civilian oversight boards or changes to legal protections for officers will *not* be among them.  Gazelka says about controversial measures in that and other areas:

“There’s a lot of policy provisions that both sides are not gonna agree on, and in the end… we’re gonna be throwing those overboard.”
