House Democrats’ push for another good-sized bonding bill for state public works projects will be part of budget negotiations in the final weeks of the legislative session when lawmakers return to the Minnesota Capitol tomorrow (Tues). House D-F-Lers are pushing for a package in the billion-dollar-plus range, but Senator Tom Bakk, an Independent from Cook says:

“I would like to minimize the amount of bonding we do, the borrowing we do, to preserve cash for the regular budget.”

Bakk says a lot will depend on whether anticipated federal funds from the American Rescue Act can be used on tax relief for businesses and individuals hurt by the pandemic.   But he says there are currently “a lot of unknowns” on how that federal money can be spent.
