M Health Fairview won’t use race to determine kidney health. The health care system made the announcement Tuesday based on recommendations from a physician’s task force last year. Nationwide practices have consistently used different guidelines for a key kidney health measure for Black people as opposed to non-Black people. M Health says this was based on the “incorrect assumption that race is biological,” making Black people’s kidneys seem healthier than they actually are. This also meant that Black people would be less likely to qualify for a kidney transplant. M Health Fairview says this is one step in their work to help eliminate structural racism in healthcare.
