The U-S House last night (Wed) passed a bill named for George Floyd that would ban police chokeholds, change immunity protections for law enforcement, and prohibit racial and religious profiling, among other measures. Fifth District Congresswoman Ilhan Omar:
“I watched horrified for eight minutes and 46 seconds as George Floyd’s life was taken from him, another innocent black man murdered by the police in our community.”
But 7th District Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach says:
“Disguised as accountability, this bill hinders law enforcement’s ability to do their jobs… and demonizes an entire profession for the actions of a few.”
The bill has the support of the Biden administration, but analysts say it still faces a tough time in the Democratic-controlled Senate because it needs at least 10 Republican votes to pass.
