The thaw and re-freeze cycle we’ve seen in Minnesota the last several days can be a hazard to your home’s roof. Terry Webster a home energy expert with the Minnesota Department of Commerce says ice dams often form on roofs and eves where warm air escaping from the attic and accelerating the thaw and re-freeze cycle.
“One thing a lot of people like to do is throw salt on the roof, that is not a good idea. Another thing people like to do is crawl up there with an ice chipper, need I say there are perils involved with that.”
Webster says the only real way to clear the jam, call a professional who can use steam equipment to solve the issue.
