House lawmakers take public testimony this afternoon (3pm) on a controversial bill to legalize recreational marijuana in Minnesota.   The sponsor is the Democratic majority leader, Golden Valley Representative Ryan Winkler:

“Our priorities are to end the black market for cannabis and move to a safe, regulated marketplace where consumers know what they’re getting.”

Governor Tim Walz supports the move:

“Because of not just the revenue sources that are there that dwarf sports betting, but because of the equity issue and, to be quite honest, the racial impact of our cannabis laws.”

But in the Republican-controlled Senate, there’s stiff opposition to legalizing recreational marijuana. Majority Leader Paul Gazelka says although he’s open to looking at additional *medicinal* uses for cannabis, “I would not consider legalizing recreational marijuana as a Minnesota priority.”
