Governor Tim Walz is urging legislative leaders to put into law “core provisions” of his COVID emergency orders, including a mask mandate for public indoor spaces and indoor businesses. Republican Majority Leader Paul Gazelka responds the Minnesota Senate will not support having a mask mandate in state law:

“We can find a way to keep encouraging people until the danger of the virus is over, but I don’t think we should mandate ’em.   The governor does and, while that’s the case, that’s what’s gonna happen.”

Governor Walz is also asking lawmakers to put his moratorium on evictions into state law with “a specific timeline for its end to avoid surprises and a surge in evictions.”   Gazelka says landlords have not been able to evict tenants for about 10 months and “there is a point where you’re gonna destroy the person that owns that building.”
