President Trump says he’s focused on ensuring a smooth transition of power. It’s the closest Trump has come to conceding defeat since Election Day. In the video, he also condemned the violence at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday but for many in Congress it’s too little too late and impeachment is still an option. Carleton College analyst Steven Schier says despite calls for Trump’s impeachment, it probably won’t happen with only two weeks left in his term:

“National politicians want to look forward now and get past this as quickly as they can, and so litigating these differences now, on the eve of the new presidency, is not something I think a lot of national politicians will want to do.”

Trump said his attempts to overturn the results were merely efforts to ensure elections are secure. Trump also called for calm and unity as the nation moves forward.
