On the first day of the 2021 Minnesota Legislature, sharp disagreement between Republicans and Democrats on whether the state should provide additional aid to individuals and businesses affected by the pandemic. Senate G-O-P Majority Leader Paul Gazelka:

“I don’t know that I expect another extension of unemployment benefits. We passed legislation in December to do that.”

And Gazelka says additional help for small businesses will be “difficult” because the state has to balance a budget that will be over a billion dollars short. House Democratic Majority Leader Ryan Winkler responds:

“Pretty callous to think that we can just step back and do nothing because we think that our budget deficit will get in the way. We have to help people when they need it.”
