Receptions for weddings, funerals and similar events face new capacity restrictions under Governor Tim Walz’s latest COVID emergency order. Republican state Representative Dave Baker from Willmar responds:

“Weddings are really getting pummeled, going from 250 today to a wedding max, down to 50 here in just a couple weeks.”

The governor responds weddings and funerals are “hugely important human activities and it is incredibly painful not to do them” — but warns of COVID spread:

“What we’re seeing is, not the actual ceremonies involved in this, but the social gatherings afterwards.”

The governor is also asking Minnesotans to limit private gatherings to 10 people, whether inside or outside, with participants from no more than three households:

“You mix more households, obviously it just adds a whole ‘nother dimension.”

First District Congressman Jim Hagedorn says the governor and his administration should do a better job protecting the most vulnerable, especially the elderly, “and let those who are younger and healthier go about their business and utilize personal responsibility and best judgment.”
