A state Senate committee today met to discuss its recent report critical of the response to riots sparked by the death of George Floyd. Republicans say the situation escalated due to a lack of decisive action from leadership–including Governor Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. Senator Scott Newman, who co-authored the report today asks “where do we go from here?”

“We have seen since the end of May an increase in violence in the state of Minnesota, particularly in the Twin Cities area, I have little or no doubt in my mind that Minnesota will experience riots in the future.”

No Democrats attended today’s meeting, but in a statement, DFL Senators say they reject what they call the “partisan” report and claim it “does nothing to further reconciliation and fails to address the root causes of civil unrest.”

Senator Dave Osmek from Mound accused Walz and Frey of spreading misinformation in the press and on social media during the riots and had this recommendation for them:

“If you don’t know what you’re talking about, shut up.”
