State House lawmakers took a break from debating a $1.9 billion bonding bill to discuss the matter of wearing masks on the House floor. Republican Representative Steve Drazkowski from Mazeppa objected to House leadership asking members to wear masks and said to Majority Leader Ryan Winkler…

“Majority Leader Winkler, why don’t you stay home, because many of us believe we’re being very safe here.”

Winkler addressed House Speaker Melissa Hortman in response…

“It is not only delving into personalities but is going far before the question before us, which is your authority to require masks in this chamber.”

Wednesday’s back and forth stemmed in part from controversy during Monday’s House floor debate when Speaker Hortman asked Representative Mary Franson of Alexandria to wear a mask as a precaution to protect from COVID-19.
