Political lines formed quickly over a report from the Minnesota Senate on the response to riots sparked by the death of George Floyd. Republicans say the situation escalated due to a lack of decisive action from leadership. Democrats call that assumption, and the report itself, one-sided. Senator Scott Newman, who co-authored the report, says the purpose of all the work is to identify strategies to prevent violence in the first place.

“That’s really the end purpose of the investigation and the report. We have to learn from the mistakes we made in the past so that we do not repeat them in the future.”

One recommendation made within the report was to prevent riots from starting by having “frank and open conversations about social injustice.”
