As Minnesotans button up the cabin for winter, some may not be thinking about the long term future of their getaway. Duluth-based attorney Chris Dahlberg says that is why having an estate plan, with a focus on the lake place, is crucial.

“It really is getting to be one of the most valuable legacies or heirlooms that you can leave to your family. And so people, when they’re doing their estate planning, not only thinking about their house and their bank accounts and their stock portfolios, but they’re saying, what about that cabin and how do I transition it?”

Dahlberg says the first place to start is to find an estate planner that understands unique situations involving cabin estate planning and then brainstorm with your family about what the best options for the cabin will be down the road.
