It has been a big year for boating in Minnesota as more people stuck closer to home. The DNR’s Lisa Dugan says they expect that to continue on this labor day and has a few basic safety reminders as you head out on the water.

“Let somebody know where you’re going and when you expect to be home. Always bring those life jackets and wear them any time you’re on the water. Bring a communication device, something that had your GPS coordinates.”

Dugan says always have a safety plan that everyone on the boat knows before you hit the water. There have been 13 fatal boating accidents this year, the most pre-labor day fatalities since 2011.
