New policy introduced by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief Mediera Arradando aims to reduce the amount of force officers use. Arradando says:

“The most impactful thing that we do in this profession is when a decision is made and we have to take a life. Sanctity of life is the cornerstone of how we are guided as a police department, so I these new changes and updates to use-of-force policy I think is one that keeps both our officers and our public safe.”

New language in the policy will ask officers to reconsider how they think of force, encouraging people to consider actions like unholstering a gun a “threat of force.” The changes come in the wake of the May police killing of George Floyd.
