North Mankato announces the placement of the Sitting Bull Statue in Benson Park, overlooking the recently established prairie.
The Sitting Bull Statue was donated to the City by Jon Pluto, an area resident, and was created by Thomas Miller, a local sculptor.
North Mankato City Administrator John Harrenstein says Benson Park was selected as the location for this statute because it has undergone a major prairie establishment and Sitting Bull was also known as a protector of the prairie.
In the future, the site will include two educational signs providing information on the significance of Sitting Bull and the significance of Thomas Miller as a local artist, as well as telling the history of the statue and how it came to be placed in Benson Park. The City plans for a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony to take place in the near future.
