The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning about scams involving callers pretending to be government officials amid COVID-19. The BBB’s Bao Vang says the scams are often convincing because…

“Many times the caller id actually displays actual numbers and names of government agencies, so it looks legitimate, number two, the callers often already have some personal information about you.”

Vang says many of the scams involve callers claiming to be tax officials, representatives from the Social Security Administration, officials from the Centers for Disease Control or COVID-19 contact tracers. A recent AARP survey found that 44-percent of people in the U-S have been contacted by one of these impersonators.
