On July 28th, 2020, at 2:28 pm North Mankato Police officers responded to a report of two people inside of a car in the parking lot of Colony Court Apartments (1621 Colony Court) who were in possession of a handgun. The caller advised police that he had observed the occupants loading the weapon.
Officers located the vehicle in the parking lot of the apartment complex, and while they were making initial contact with the driver and occupants the vehicle fled. The vehicle fled eastbound on Lee Blvd. to Lookout Dr., and then eastbound on Lookout Dr to northbound US Hwy 169. The vehicle then turned eastbound onto US Hwy 14 reaching speeds up to 90 mph. The vehicle turned southbound onto Riverfront Dr, and crashed into the curb while turning eastbound onto Rock St. in the City of Mankato.
The driver fled the scene on foot and was taken into custody without incident a short time later after being found outside of a residence on the 600 Blk of Second St. A firearm was recovered near where the driver was located. Three passengers in the vehicle were also taken into custody
The driver, a 23-year-old Austin man, is currently being held at the Nicollet County Detention Center and will be facing charges of fleeing in a motor vehicle and weapons charges. A passenger in the vehicle, a 21-year-old Mankato man, was arrested on an outstanding Blue Earth County warrant. The remaining two passengers were released after being identified.
North Mankato Police were assisted by the Mankato Police Department, Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office, Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office, and MN State Patrol.
The case remains under investigation and there is no further information at this time.
