State representative Jeff Brand of St. Peter says the police accountability bill signed by the Governor Thursday was a good start but said discussions related to policing need to continue.

“It’s a first step,” said Brand. “But there’s a lot of things that still need to be pondered, thought about, and considered more thoughtfully and these conversations need to be held locally.”

The measure includes a ban on chokeholds and neck restraints, a prohibition on warrior-style training, and enhancement of data collection around deadly force encounters.
