For the first time, the Minnesota Department of Health is reporting a COVID-19 death of a child.

“We are very sad to report the death of a nine-month-old who tested positive for COVID-19,” said MDH Commissioner Jan Malcom. “Based on what we know right now it appears to be an isolated incident related to this infant’s very specific situation.”

Malcom says out of respect for the family they won’t be releasing any specific information but will ask the CDC to investigate the case. Kris Ehresman with MDH says there were two causes of deaths listed for the infant.

“Upper and lower respiratory infection and a positive culture for COVID-19,” said Ehresman.

Malcom believes it is one of the youngest COVID-19 related deaths in the country.
