Minneapolis Police Sergeant Anna Hedberg told a Senate committee damage to the city could have been lessened and the 3rd Precinct could have been defended — if top officials had ordered in reinforcements that were on standby early in the Minneapolis riots. Hedberg testified at the Capitol:
“I was in the command post. I heard it: I heard the governor say, give it up. It wasn’t directly to me, it was through a phone call, how the governor says, give up the precinct.”
Hedberg later acknowledged to reporters she got that information third-hand. A Walz spokesman responds the allegation that the governor said, give up the precinct, is not true — that the state did not assume operational control until the following day — and notes that Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said it was his decision to abandon the 3rd Precinct to prevent loss of life.
