Opening day of the legislature’s second special session of 2020 saw the GOP-controlled Minnesota Senate again voting to cancel Governor Tim Walz’s COVID emergency authority — a move which will go nowhere in the Democrat-controlled House. Republican Senator Scott Jensen from Chaska says:
“We’re not gonna get through this by having someone serve as an emperor of Minnesota. We need to draw together.”
“I’ve heard dictator,… tyrant,… emperor. I know Tim Walz…. I think he doesn’t like to be forced into a position where he has to have executive authority like this, but somebody does have to make some major decisions.”
Roseville Democrat John Marty argues lawmakers can override Walz’s decisions if they really want to.
