Summer is the season of fireworks and thunderstorms. The sporadic and unexpected sounds can scare your pets. They can also make dogs, in particular, feel threatened or trapped. University of Minnesota Veterinarian Susan Lowum you know your dog is stressed when:

“Being a little bit more alert than usual or it can range all the way to absolutely being terrified of what’s going on with the noise and the fireworks. By terrified I mean shaking, trembling, trying to escape. Even hurting themselves by scratching and fighting to get out.”

Lowum says if you’re dog or cat does show symptoms, not to ignore them or scold them, instead get them to a quiet place in your home away from the noise.
