Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has called for a special session of the legislature to begin Friday. The governor says the goals of the session will be economic recovery and police accountability. Walz says lawmakers have a historic opportunity.

“This moment will not be upon us again,” said Walz. “Let’s show them that democracy works. Let’s show them that in this moment that what those people did going to the streets makes a difference. Let’s show them that by raising their voices change can come about.”

Walz said in a Wednesday press conference he would extend his peacetime authority, which currently is scheduled to end Friday.
